We can help release the potential of your horse

Breaking-in

If you want to give your horse the best start in life, then give it a Talkinghorses start. Sending your horse to us will give you the peace of mind that your horse is being professionally educated. Horses broken-in by Andrew will not have to be “fixed” at a later date. Our aim is to start building a relationship with the horse based on trust and respect, to use the minimum of pressure, and to ensure the horse is responsive, quiet and easy to handle. The process normally takes between 4 and 5 weeks and clients are welcome to take as active a role as they would like. The first week is normally spent on handling and teaching basic groundwork skills and releasing tension. By the second week, the horse will be happy and comfortable with the saddle and will have been ridden bareback. By the end of the third week the horse is working under the saddle safely and quietly. The final weeks are spent teaching the horse steering, stopping and transitions, riding in the arena, around the racetrack and hacking out to the beach. Before your horse returns home, it will also be float loaded.

Fixing problems

Whatever problem you and your horse have, Talkinghorses can help you overcome it. We have worked and fixed all types of horses, with problems big and small. These include float-loading, bucking, rearing, dependency issues, shoeing, bad manners on the ground, dangerous under the saddle, and more. The Talkinghorses system has developed over the years and every horse, whatever its problem, will spend the first week going through the system. During this week they will learn groundwork skills which will often change the attitude of the horse and establish safe boundaries. We can then start working on the problem itself. Clients are encouraged to get involved so that they understand how to deal with the horse in the future. Most clients send their horses to us but Andrew also gives lessons in the Wellington and Manawatu region. He is also available for clinics. Schooling, Jumping and Selling-on

Pre-training

Our pre-training approach differs from many other yards.  We take a three pronged approach.

  1. Mental.  We like to give your horse a break from the track and make sure he has lots of new experiences.
  2. Re-education.  We address any behavioural issues so that your horse is calm, confident and relaxed allowing him to focus on winning.
  3. Physical.  Your horse will get a long, slow build-up on the beach, hills, roads and farm to make sure he is really fit when he returns to the track.

Schooling, Jumping and Selling-on

Talkinghorses has a high success rate in getting the best price for your horse. That’s because we have a reputation for safe, well-mannered, quiet horses. Every horse we sell goes through the Talkinghorses system before our experienced competitive riders begin schooling and jumping. If the horse is being sold as a competitive prospect, we will also compete it.

Confidence Building

If you are lacking confidence in any sphere of your horse experience, then we can help you feel happy and confident once again. Andrew gives private groundwork and riding lessons, which will allow you to take control once again.
